Malaysia’s Effort to Achieve the Developed Nation Status Likely to Depend on Focused Investments in Tertiary Care Medical Equipment Infrastructure

Malaysia as it stands represents the highest number of cases recovering from coronavirus (COVID-19) in the ASEAN region. Presented with the challenge early on, the country’s past experience of dealing with Nipah virus aided the initiation of its preventive strategy revolving largely around travel restrictions, testing and partial to complete lockdown. While the preventive measures are being implemented, the Kementerian Kesihatan - Malaysia, is working towards the provision of critical care infrastructure for its vulnerable population. The country since then has procured >100 ICU beds and ~800 new ventilators for treatment of critical COVID-19 cases.

As of 2019, about 376 hospitals were functioning in Malaysia. Around 56 of them are equipped to provide tertiary care services. The number is set to rise in the next 3-4 years, with Malaysia’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) aiming to hasten growth in health infrastructure. Steady growth in healthcare spending was also noticeable, with a 7.8% Y-o-Y increase in 2018-2019, as the Government hopes to meet the WHO recommended 7% of GDP spent on healthcare.

According to EMeRG’s new HospeTrack Hospital Intelligence for Malaysia, this impetus by the Government is expected to accelerate the number of hospitals scaling up from secondary to tertiary care services. For the next 3-4 years, growth could potentially be driven by the 320 secondary care hospitals in the country, that hold up to 800+ ICU beds, accounting for 47% of overall ICU beds in the country. Malaysia currently has ~1,000 mechanical ventilators in Intensive Care facilities (ICUs). The new data from the report quantitatively demonstrate a strong potential for the medical devices market in the country.
