The plaque disclosing market is anticipated to record a CAGR of nearly 5.1%, during the forecast period. Certain factors that are driving the market growth include rising global geriatric population and increasing prevalence of dental plaques.

Key Highlights

  • Plaque is the sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms on teeth. It makes teeth feel fuzzy to the tongue and is most noticeable when teeth are not brushed. Plaque develops when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches), such as milk, soft drinks, raisins, cakes, or candy are frequently left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay. Plaque can also develop on the tooth roots under the gum and cause a breakdown of the bone supporting the tooth.
  • Biofilm can be accurately localized with special dyes, mainly iodine, gentian violet, erythrosine, basic fuchsin, fast green, food dyes, fluorescein, and two-tone disclosing agents in the form of tablets, solutions, wafers, lozenges, or mouth rinses. When taken, these agents color the areas of the oral cavity where biofilm is present. The intensity of the color depends on thickness of the plaque.
  • The increasing prevalence of dental plaque conditions is expected to boost the growth of the market over the forecast period.

Key Market Trends

Geriatric Population Holds Significant Share in the Plaque Disclosing Market

  • As per the revised World Population Prospects, by the United Nations, the number of people aged 60 or above is expected to grow greater than double by 2050, i.e. from 962 million in 2017 to 2.1 billion in 2050, globally. This age group is highly vulnerable to different types of age-related diseases that require personal mobility aid.
  • Receding gums are common in older adults. As in old age, the gum tissue pulls away from the tooth, exposing the base, or root, of the tooth, it makes it easy for bacteria to build up and cause inflammation and decay.
  • Gingivitis is an early type of gum disease. It occurs when plaque and tartar build-up, irritate and inflame the gums. Periodontitis is called severe gum disease. It can lead to loss of teeth. Hence, dental plaque is a serious condition observed among the geriatric population.
