Jorge Bom Jesus, the leader of the Movimento de Libertacao de Sao Tome e Príncipe-Partido Social Democrata (MLSTP-PSD), became prime minister at end-2018. Prospects for governability are fair, as Mr Jesus continues to have the backing of most legislators.

Dependence on aid inflows and the coronavirus pandemic means that the coalition government will struggle to juggle efforts to lower public debt, reduce poverty, and improve the business climate in 2020-21.

The publisher expects real GDP growth to contract by 5.6% in 2020, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, before economic growth recovers to 2.3% in 2021, on the back of a global recovery.
