The CAVK device creates a three-dimensional graphic image of the cornea of the patient, allowing for the assessment of corneal health. Corneal topography helps to detect abnormal corneal conditions, which are invisible in standard testing. Usage of corneal topography devices offers a comprehensive examination that assists in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of various eye disorders. These devices are often used to fit the contact lenses and to prepare laser-eye surgeries.

Computerized corneal topography aids in assessing other ophthalmic conditions and in examining corneal injuries involving corneal abrasions, corneal disorders, corneal deformities, post-operative cataract detachment, and abnormal astigmatism. Corneal topography with topographers is used in cataract surgery (to research astigmatism in post-operative surgery), in refractive surgery such as LASIK (to screen applicants for normal corneal shape, patterns and to rule out abnormal or keratoconic patterns) or in the examination of contact lenses.

The principles of Scheimpflug allow the capturing of focused images of objects not parallel to the camera and the lens, such as a curved cornea. It is done by careful movement of the planes of the image and of the lens. It is achieved in the Pentacam by spinning around a central axis and taking 50 meridional images. Major factors driving the demand for corneal topographers include the growing prevalence and incidence of age-associated ophthalmic conditions along with the rising number of government programs to raise awareness for early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of these conditions.
