Following the French veto in October 2019 on opening EU accession negotiations, the then prime minister, Zoran Zaev, proposed a snap election for April 2020, now postponed owing to a state of emergency related to the coronavirus pandemic.

We expect Mr Zaev's Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) to be defeated in the election by the nationalist opposition VMRO-Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE), but the coronavirus crisis makes for great uncertainty.

The electorate may punish the government for failing to do enough to tackle corruption and for pushing through the unpopular Prespa agreement, under which the formerly named Macedonia changed its name to the Republic of North Macedonia.
