Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) have complex machines and devices designed to meet the unique needs of small babies. The NICU will overpower a new parent. Learning about what to expect from the NICU can help to ease your concerns. Heart or cardiorespiratory monitor shows the heart of the child and the breathing levels and rhythms on the screen.

Pulse oximeter tests the volume of oxygen in the blood of the baby through the clothing. A tiny light is taped to the child's foot or hand. A wire connects the light to the monitor where the oxygen saturation or "sat" is shown. This refers to the volume of haemoglobin in the red blood cells of the infant that is filled with oxygen.

Portable x-ray machines can be brought to the bedside of the baby in the NICU. X-rays use invisible electromagnetic energy beams to produce images of internal tissues, bones, and film organs. X-rays are used for a number of reasons, including checking the placement of catheters and other tubes, looking for signs of lung problems, such as respiratory distress syndrome or pneumothorax, and checking for signs of intestinal problems.

CT scan is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of X-ray and computer technologies to generate horizontal or axial photographs (often called slices) of the body. The CT scan shows detailed pictures of any part of the body, including bones, muscles, fat, and organs. CT scans are more detailed than general X-ray scans. CT scans are often performed to assess bleeding inside a baby's head.
