Phacoemulsification is a modern cataract surgery which deals with emulsification or liquefaction of the natural lens of the eye. It uses an ultrasonic probe to break up and remove a cloudy lens, or cataract from the eyes. The technique has become a gold standard for cataract surgery globally due to its relatively higher visual rehabilitation outcome.

Technological prowess in the ophthalmology industry has led to the development of new advanced phacoemulsification systems with exceptional versatility. These systems portray simplified graphical UI, wireless remote control and various other advanced features.

Executive Summary

A cataract is an eye disease which is caused due to opacification of the lens of the eye. It is the most common form of blindness globally. There are three primary types of age-related cataracts: nuclear sclerotic, cortical, and posterior subcapsular. With aging, any one type, or a combination of any of these three types of cataracts tends to develop in an individual. Treatment of cataract is only possible through surgical intervention. There are three basic techniques for cataract surgery - Phacoemulsification, Extracapsular cataract surgery and Intracapsular cataract surgery. Phacoemulsification is the most common form of cataract removal.

Phacoemulsification surgical procedure is a microincision modern cataract surgical method that is minimally invasive in nature with excellent visual outcomes, patient safety, and efficacy. Growth of phacoemulsification surgery for cataract treatment is attributed to prevalence of cataract cases, the rise in number of diabetics, the increasing geriatric population and the minimally invasive nature of the procedure. However, the market faces several challenges due to stringent regulatory compliance, the possibility of post-surgical complications and side-effects, lack of awareness of the procedure and a dearth of skilled professionals.
