  • July 2020
  • Region: Eswatini
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit
1 of 2
Although the survival of the country's monarchy is not in doubt, a severe economic contraction will exacerbate widespread dissatisfaction with the lack of political reform. This will manifest itself in strikes, protests and low-level violent unrest.

The fiscal deficit will widen to 8.6% of GDP in 2020 (from an estimated 5.9% in 2019) as government revenue collapses and spending stays high. The shortfall will then narrow to 6.1% of GDP in 2021 as revenue growth outpaces rising spending.

Real GDP is expected to contract by 5.6% in 2020, following growth of 2% in 2019, owing to the global economic contraction arising from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. A recovery in South Africa in 2021 will return eSwatini to growth, averaging 0.9% that year.
