The elections held on July 15th delivered a fragmented parliament. The incumbent Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) narrowly emerged as the largest party, winning 46 seats out of 160 in parliament.

The SDSM will have to make major ministerial concessions to form a government with the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration (DUI). Such a coalition would command a slim majority, with 61 seats, and would be unlikely to last a full term.

Despite the EU's decision in late March to open accession negotiations, The Economist Intelligence Unit does not expect talks to begin in earnest until 2021, delayed first by the election and then by EU policymakers, who will be distracted by the pandemic.
