In the News
On February 14, 2020, Rain Bird, a US based irrigation solutions company introduced the ESP-LXIVM Series, consisting of two new, easy-to-use controllers for two-wire irrigation systems that provide large, challenging sites with advanced water management tools, diagnostics and a host of new-to-the-industry features.

On September 26, 2018, HydroPoint Data Systems, Inc., a US based smart irrigation solutions company teams up with AT&T, US telecom giant and Lowe’s Companies, Inc., a North American retail company to utilize AT&T connectivity and help reduce water used for Lowe’s store landscaping.

Introduction:

An irrigation controller is a device which facilitates the operation of automatic irrigation systems such as lawn sprinklers and drip irrigation systems. Usually, these controllers have a means of setting the frequency of irrigation, i.e., the number of times the plants need to be watered per day, the start time, and the duration of watering. Additional features like multiple programs to allow different watering frequencies for varieties of plants, rain delay settings, input terminals for sensors such as rain and freeze sensors, soil moisture sensors, weather data, remote operation, and others. There are two basic types of controllers, electric and hydraulic. Most new irrigation systems employ electro mechanical or electronic controllers.

There are broadly two categories of irrigation controllers: gardening applications for domestic use, and professional controllers for more demanding agricultural processes. While most domestic (gardening) controllers can only open/close based on a time duration without any feedback from the irrigation process, professional irrigation controllers can irrigate based on volume (quantities defined in cubic meters /gallons), receive feedback from the process, and have real time monitoring controls to assess the output and shut down automatically. In addition to that, the availability of these controllers for different terrains makes them a less of a burden for the farmers. These are some of the notable attributes that are anticipated to drive the consumer inclination towards utilizing irrigation controllers in agriculture.

Market Size and Forecast

Increasing awareness towards water conservation and maintaining water table levels that result in global efforts towards a growing horticulture and vegetation market are some of the significant factors anticipated to boost the market growth. Additionally, driven by these prominent factors and with favorable government regulations for permitting irrigation controllers as a means to encourage advanced irrigation and agricultural practices, the global irrigation controllers market is estimated to grow with notable CAGR during the forecast period, i.e., 2020-2028.

Growth Drivers

Adverse Environmental Impacts Of Food Production And Agriculture

According to the UN FAO, food accounts for over a quarter (26%) of global greenhouse gas emissions, Half of the world’s habitable (ice- and desert-free) land is used for agriculture; 70% of global freshwater withdrawals are used for agriculture; 78% of global ocean and freshwater eutrophication (the pollution of waterways with nutrient-rich pollutants) is caused by agriculture. As per a study by the World Bank in 2017, the demand for food is expected to rise due to the increasing population. Hence, to meet the food requirements, the agricultural production will need to expand by 70% by 2050. This adverse impact of agriculture on the fresh water resources on the planet is leading to severe famines and arid droughts across the world and turning the lands barren. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) recommended steps to help countries improve the sustainability of agriculture by developing cost-effective agricultural policies. The policies are expected to boost productivity and reduce environmental damage by incorporating proper irrigation solutions.

Increasing adoption of climate-smart agriculture solutions by the governments to help small-scale farmers in order to maintain and improve water management is anticipated to boost the market growth. In addition to that, various subsidies offered by governments and manufacturers amidst Covid-19 are some of the considerable factors that are estimated to promote the growth of the market. Additionally, this growth is backed by rising number of initiatives taken by governments of different regions to promote water conservation efforts from across the globe.

By Region

On the basis of regional analysis, the irrigation controllers market is segmented into five major regions including North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Middle East & Africa region. The market in North America is anticipated to hold the largest share on account of presence of leading market players which manufacture and market irrigation controllers. Additionally, presence of lawns, gardens and horticulture, playgrounds and golf courses and micro-irrigation activities in the region are further estimated to contribute towards the market growth. The market for irrigation controllers in Asia Pacific is expected to register highest growth rate during the forecast period on account of presence of vast irrigation lands and government policies in the region which is expected to contribute towards the development of the market. Moreover, the growing requirements for continuously improving the agricultural productivity and rising tech enthusiast farmers in the region further increases the product demand.
