The Europe feed probiotics market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.9% during the forecast period (2020-2025). Increasing consumer awareness regarding scientific animal nutrition is the major driving force behind the growth of the probiotic market in the region. Increase in industrialized livestock production, and the increasing demand for animal-based protein sources are the factors augmenting the growth of the market studied. Prebiotics aids in enhancing the animal's health by improving the gut performance, increasing the intake of nutrients, boosting immunity, and by balancing the pH. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization in 2016, the poultry bird population in Europe was 2412.68 million as compared to 2470.54 million in 2018. As per Eurostat, about one half of the European meat production was from pigs amounting to 23.8 million tonnes and 15.2 million tonnes of poultry meat in 2018. Feed companies in the region are diversifying their product portfolio by launching new probiotics products. In 2018, Nutravet, a United Kingdom-based company launches Nutraflora, a probiotic capsule that aims to recover and support convalescence in dogs and cats.

Rising Trend of Meat Production on a Commercial Scale

Increasing the growth of population and change in the consumer preference to healthier and protein-rich diets has enhanced the meat production in Europe. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD), in 2018, the per capita poultry meat consumption in the United Kingdom was 27.8 Kg that has increased to 28.3 Kg in 2019. Rising consumption has led to an increase in the production of meat. For instance, according to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), in 2018 production of meat in Russia, Germany, and Spain was 10.62 million tons, 8.18 million tons, and 7.02 million tons as compared to 10.3 million tons, 8.28 million tons, and 6.66 million tons respectively in 2017. Thus, an increase in demand for meat has led to the growth in the usage of feed probiotics to enhance the quality of the produce.

Russia Dominates the Market

Poultry meat is the most consumed in the country, as per OECD, in 2016, per capita consumption was 29.5 Kg that has increased to 31.7 Kg in 2019. This shift in preference for animal-sourced protein has led to commercial livestock production. Russia is the largest feed producer country in the region with the presence of 571 feed mills. Alltech global feed survey, in 2019 production of feed in the country was 40.5 million tons of which 16.94 million tons was pig feed, 10.86 million tons of Broiler feed, and 4.2 million tons was for the dairy. Thus, growing meat consumption coupled with mass production of livestock has resulted in higher feed production which in turn, drives the market for probiotics in the country. Furthermore, as per the Russian agricultural ministry, the government decided to spend USD 180 million by every year on the livestock industry for various R&D projects and to encourage new investors in the feed market. Also, the government has set a goal to increase the feed conversion ratio from 10 % to 12% by 2025.
