Overview:

The massive growth of the population of older adults - known as the Age Wave - is expected to take place in the next two decades. It has fueled an ever-growing concern about how to manage the mental health issues that area also expected to follow.

The current system does not do enough to help older adults with mental disorders. Since the next two decades will bring with it an increase in the elderly population, the number of mental health disorders is expected to increase by roughly fifty percent.

The current system not only does not do enough to help older adults cope with behavioral health disorders nor does it provide adequate training for those who frequently see these patient populations.

For this reason, education directed to health care personnel about behavioral health conditions becomes increasingly important as people age. Join us to increase awareness, remove barriers to diagnosis and treatment, and coordinate meaningful behavioral health outcomes.

Why you should Attend:

Few health care providers possess the training to differentiate normal aging from common mental health disorders. An additional barrier is that older patients are often reluctant to discuss their emotional difficulties with their healthcare provider. This suggests there is a stigma felt by many older adults toward mental illness.

By educating healthcare personnel about the warning signs of common mental health disorders, this can help make detection of mental illnesses easier so that integrated treatment remedies can be sought. In doing so, you will have the ability to improve the overall quality of life of our elders.

Areas Covered in the Session:
  • Become familiar with common mental health disorders amongst older adults
  • Be able to differentiate between normal aging changes versus common mental health disorders
