The Republic of South Africa is the southernmost country in Africa with a population of over 59m. South Africa has three capital cities - Cape Town (the legislative capital), Pretoria (the executive capital). and Bloemfontein (the judicial capital). South Africa is a multiethnic society with a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. It has 11 official languages. English is recognised as the language of commerce and science, though it is only the fourth most common home language, after Zulu, Xhosa, and Afrikaans.

South Africa is divided into nine provinces. It has a three-tier parliamentary system of government, with an independent judiciary. The parliament of South Africa holds legislative authority. The African National Congress has been in government since 1994, winning a parliamentary majority at every election since the former apartheid system was dissolved. The party retains an absolute majority in both chambers and holds the country’s presidency. Cyril Ramaphosa is South Africa’s president and president of the African National Congress.
