Summary
Myanmar Cigarettes, 2020, is an analytical report by the publisher that provides extensive and highly detailed current and future market trends in the Myanmar Cigarette market. It covers market size and structure along with per capita and overall consumption. Additionally, it focuses on brand data, retail pricing, prospects, and forecasts for sales and consumption until 2030.
The Myanmar economy has remained relatively buoyant, with annual GDP growth exceeding 6% per annum in recent years. Increased international investment in Myanmar and expansion in local manufacturing capacity is helping boost cigarette sales volumes, in particular with BAT’s decision to re-enter the market especially notable. Sales have grown from 15,100 million pieces in 2012 to 15,600 million pieces in 2013, although they did suffer a fall to 14,500 million pieces in 2015 due to the impact of tax rises. Recently further tax rises have led to a slowdown with a fall of 6.7% forecast for 2019. Contraband and competition from other forms of tobacco, particularly cheroots, remain key barriers to the development of the market.
Scope
- Filter cigarettes saw an increase in the share of the market in recent years as domestic production developed. From a level of 65% in 1990 they accounted for 72% of sales in 1997. Filter cigarettes, and plain cigarettes, remain the preserve of urban residents. The demand for plain brands is declining gradually as consumers trade-up to filter brands.
- More recent surveys suggest the incidence of smoking in Myanmar is increasing. According to the WHO, 45% of men and 8% of women were smokers in 2012 although only 4% were actual smokers of cigarettes with products like cheroots being much more popular. The WHO STEPS report in 2014 placed male smoking at 43.8% and female smoking at 8.4% among those aged 25-64.
- Consumer tastes should continue to favor filter varieties and Virginian blends will dominate, although in the long-term the growth could be in American blends. The complete internationalization of the market is some way off however, despite BAT re-commencing local production recently.
