  • The growing adoption of contactless card payments for transport services will support card payment market growth. Visa partnered with Nagaragawa Railway and Sumitomo Mitsui Card to introduce Stera transit:a public transport payment solution on the routes operated by Nagaragawa Railway:from June 1, 2022, enabling commuters to make transit payments using contactless Visa cards. Previously, Visa enabled contactless payments on Alpico Kotsu's express buses in December 2021, while JCB enabled contactless card payments on Shiga Kogen Line and Madarao Kogen Line buses during the same month.
  • Amid COVID-19, retailers are implementing new technologies to provide a safer shopping experience at stores. In March 2022, 7-Eleven stores in Japan started trialing new holographic POS systems developed by Toshiba. The holographic display enables customers to interact with images projected by the virtual touchscreen in mid-air. Customers scan their products, select the payment method, and confirm the transaction on the virtual screen without touching the self-checkout kiosk directly. Customers can make payments using payment cards or by scanning a QR code using supported mobile wallet solutions.
  • Buy now pay later services are gradually gaining prominence in Japan. Payment solutions providers such as Paidy, Pace, and Splitit offer buy now pay later facilities. To further drive its usage, Paidy launched the Paidy Link feature in April 2021. The feature enables Paidy users to link their Paidy account with digital wallet solutions such as PayPal and make purchases in installments. In September 2021, PayPal acquired Paidy for $2.7 billion to expand its business in Japan. However, Paidy continues to operate as a separate brand. The increasing demand for BNPL among consumers is driving more players to enter the market. In November 2021, payment services provider Smartpay launched its BNPL offering.
