Executive Summary

Expansion programme at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) may drive the demand for world-class medical equipment.

With one of the highest per capita health spending, Qatar has been establishing itself as one of the global leaders in healthcare delivery. As of 2020, Qatar has about 95 healthcare facilities including hospitals, medical centers, and diagnostic imaging centers functioning across all levels of care. Majority of the hospitals are state-run and operated by a non-profit organization known as Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). Although currently there are only six private hospitals functioning in the country, by 2022 the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) plans to increase the number of private hospital beds by 25%. Within the HMC, only four hospitals demonstrate characteristics of tertiary care facilities. Increased investments of more than $6 Bn in healthcare in the past few years has resulted in improved life expectancy, health outcomes, and expansion of specialized services to the patients. In the next few years, Qatar’s focus will be on providing preventative care and integrated services across the country for which a detailed healthcare vision until 2033 has been proposed.

With respect to neonatal care, Qatar has achieved one of the highest neonatal survival rates in the GCC region. Qatar has dealt with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis adequately and boasts of low mortality rates due to the pandemic. The country has been utilizing five healthcare facilities, three of which are existing and two newly built hospitals towards supporting the COVID-19 patients. In addition, about 2,900 beds including 700 new ICU beds were added towards capacity improvement to deal with the pandemic. With the country demonstrating gradual signs of recovery from the pandemic, capital medical device purchases that had been stalled are likely to pick up.
