A mass flow controller (MFC) is a device that controls and measures the flow rate of a gas or liquid. It is designed and calibrated to control a certain type of liquid or gas at a specific range of flow rates. The MFC is typically operated at the 10 to 90% of full-scale range where the best accuracy is achieved but MFC have given a setpoint from 0 to 100% of its full-scale range. It automatically controls the flow rate of a gas according to a set flow rate sent as an electric signal, without being disturbed by use circumstances or modifications in gas pressure. Restraints: Variations in pressure may create offset in flow measurement

A mass flow controller has an internal control valve that automatically and continuously maintains the flow at the desired rate; however, this internal control valve operates accurately only with limited differential pressure. The internal mechanism of a control valve uses a spring that limits fluctuations in the differential pressure across the valve. Drastic fluctuations in the differential pressure cause tuning and range-related problems in control valves, resulting in a constant offset. Factors such as tuning issues and high fluctuations in differential pressure create problems for high-pressure applications. For example, in research reactors, the pressure needs to be changed during testing, or these reactors may require the dispensed gas to generate initial reactor pressure. In this case, there is a major change in the differential pressure that can cause inaccurate flow. For a few specific applications, the outlet pressure has to be significantly higher than the specified and configured pressure of the mass flow controller; this mainly causes tuning and flow range problems.
