Country Report Zambia 2nd Quarter

  • ID: 5354565
  • Country Profile
  • June 2021
  • Region: Zambia
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit
Copper is Zambia's major export, but the country is expanding into other mineral commodities such as emeralds and gold. The agricultural sector is underdeveloped, but the country has a growing services sector (including retail and wholesale industries).

Zambia's default on its Eurobond debt (at end-2020) exacerbated its pre-existing economic hardship. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects social tensions to feed into political instability, at least until after the August 12th elections, with related violence possible.

Zambia's economic policy will focus on short-term (and unsustainable) populist gestures- such as the government's purchase of the Mopani copper mine-in the run-up to the elections in August, in order to sway Zambian voters to back the current regime.
