Country Report Syria 3rd Quarter

  • ID: 5360352
  • Country Profile
  • July 2021
  • Region: Syria
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit
Syria's economy has been devastated by a decade-long conflict. The output of the main sectors, agriculture and mineral extraction, has shrunk dramatically. Destroyed infrastructure and bouts of fighting make most of the country economically unviable.

The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the president, Bashar al-Assad, to stay in power owing to a patronage system that keeps the security forces loyal. Instability will be particularly acute in 2021-22 owing to dire socioeconomic conditions and low investment.

Mr Assad will try to revive the economy, but a lack of access to debt and ongoing conflict will hinder efforts. Policymakers will attempt to offset the erosion of purchasing power by rapid inflation and currency depreciation, but their capacity to do so will be limited.
