Country Report Jamaica 3rd Quarter

  • ID: 5360353
  • Country Profile
  • July 2021
  • Region: Jamaica
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit
Jamaica is a highly indebted economy with heavy debt-servicing costs. The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted fiscal consolidation efforts, partly because of the country's dependence on services exports-mainly tourism-for growth and employment.

The Economist Intelligence Unit expects governability risks to be broadly contained in the medium term, as the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP)-the party of the prime minister, Andrew Holness-has a comfortable legislative majority.

Economic policymaking in the medium term will be guided by a return to fiscal austerity, following a modest loosening of fiscal policy in 2020 and early 2021 to deal with the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
