In simple terms, the principle behind turbocharging is to increase the amount of air forced into the engine, which increases the power output of the engine by pressure charging the inlet manifold, increasing the volumetric efficiency of the engine. The basic idea behind turbochargers in terms of boosting engine performance is well-established, but it is only in the last decade or so that the all-round benefits of turbochargers in reducing emissions have been widely recognised and their application on a widespread basis has consequently accelerated. The use of a turbocharger means either the power of a given engine size can be increased, or a specific power output level can be maintained with a smaller engine displacement.

Although the technological principles behind turbochargers are relatively straightforward and well understood, their development and enhancement has not been entirely without problems. Fitting a turbocharger has implications in terms of the engine’s operating temperature. A further issue with turbochargers is that on its own the turbocharger can cause the engine to run in a lean manner, lacking fuel and having too much air.

Despite these problems or technological challenges, the benefits of using turbochargers are now recognised to more than outweigh any such problems or challenges. And the role of the turbocharger in helping to reduce emissions is now so fundamental to the auto industry that turbocharger manufacturers are amongst the most important suppliers in the components sector as a whole. Certainly, the potential which the market offers has been attractive enough for major players.
