Phenotype refers to the physical characteristics of an organism that can be observed and measured. Interactions between alleles of an organism gives rise to different combinations of phenotypes such as morphology, biochemical properties, etc. Gregor Mendel, also known as the father of genetics was the first to carry out phenotyping in plants. Mendel formulated the laws of genetics based on phenotype assessment of a pea plant. Modern day plant phenotyping enables assessment of various complex plant traits such as physiology, ecology, growth, yield, tolerance, development, and resistance. Rising world population has led to an increase in demand of food. Advancement of agricultural practices is essential to meet the growing global food demand. Advanced plant phenotyping involves image analysis, temperature sensors, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) sensor, etc. Plant phenotyping offers applications such as plant breeding selection, stress growth analysis, photosynthesis analysis, and others, which helps in increasing the productivity, quality, and stress tolerance of crops.

Sensor technology helps PlantScreen to independently carry out plant phenotyping by collecting data such as volume, plant height, max PSII efficiency, color, biomass, etc.
