The animal model market was valued for $1.90 billion in 2022 and is estimated to reach $3.61 billion by 2032, exhibiting a CAGR of 6.6% from 2023 to 2032.

Animals that are genetically engineered for research as well as biological and pathological studies are referred to as animal models. Animal models such as rat, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits are used to study the development & advancement of various diseases and test new treatment methods before conducting human trials, as they exhibit functional similarity to the human body. However, there are several animal welfare guidelines that have to be followed while using animal models for experiments. Surge in use of animal models in virology and infectious diseases, increase in adoption of CRISPR technology, and rise in number of R&D activities are driving the growth of animal model market.

Vaccines are the most effective and economical tools in preventing and controlling infectious diseases. Owing to the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2, the variability among clinical cases, their outcomes, and high mortality rates, a race to find pharmacological treatments and vaccines was initiated once the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern in January 2020 and a pandemic in March 2020. In context, of vaccine development for COVID-19, the use and choice of reliable and well-characterized experimental models were important for the rapid advancement of research and, consequently, the registration and availability of the vaccines. According to a 2021 report by the National Library of Medicines, animal models involved in the study of COVID-19 include mice, golden hamsters, ferrets, nonhuman primates, and pigs. More than 302 vaccines were under development, of which 117 of them have successfully entered clinical trials. Thus, increase in usage of animal models in the development of vaccines for infectious diseases is expected to contribute significantly in the growth of the market.

Increased adoption of CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) technology has emerged as a major driver of the animal model market. CRISPR technology allows for precise and efficient genome editing by enabling scientists to make targeted modifications in the DNA of various organisms, including animals. This revolutionary gene-editing tool has significantly advanced the field of genetics and biomedical research, offering numerous applications in the creation of animal models. Furthermore, animal models generated by CRISPR technology have been crucial in the discovery of new medicines. This technology generates highly customized mice and rats whose DNA has been altered to reflect a humanized immune system, which enables precision modeling in research as well as target validation and efficacy assessment. Prior to the use of this technology, it took up to 18 months to produce test animals, whereas now it takes anywhere from one-third to one-half the time to create a founder animal, making it more cost-effective than alternative preclinical animal models. Thus, rise in adoption CRISPR and increase in mouse model-based research are expected to drive the growth of the market. For instance, the U.S. medical and health research and development investment reached $245.1 billion in 2020, an 11.1% increase in 2020. Increase in research activities in the mice model to effectively use them in drug development process is expected to drive the growth of the market. However, ethical guidelines for the use of animals in research are expected to restrain the growth of the animal model market.

The global animal model market is segmented into animal type, application, end user, and region. Executive Summary

According to this report, the animal model market was valued at $1.9 billion in 2022, and is estimated to reach $3.6 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 6.6% from 2023 to 2032.

The animal model market is likely to experience a significant growth rate of 6.6% from 2022-2032 owing to surge in use of animal models in virology and infectious diseases, physiological similarity of humans and animals for drug testing, increase in adoption of CRISPR technology

An animal model refers to the use of non-human organisms, typically animals, to simulate or mimic aspects of human biology, physiology, and disease in scientific research. These models play a crucial role in various fields, such as biomedical research, pharmaceutical development, genetics, and behavioral studies.

Key factors driving the growth of animal model market include Rise in usage of animal models in virology and infectious diseases, physiological similarity of humans and animals for drug testing, increase in adoption of CRISPR technology.

Rise in usage of animal models in virology and infectious diseases research is expected to drive the growth of the market. With the emergence of various viral diseases and infectious pathogens, there has been a growing need for effective treatments and vaccines. Animal models have played a crucial role in understanding the pathogenesis of these diseases and testing potential therapeutic interventions. Researchers use animal models to study disease transmission, evaluate the efficacy of antiviral drugs, and assess the safety and immunogenicity of vaccines before proceeding to human trials. By providing valuable insights into disease mechanisms and treatment options, animal models have become an indispensable tool in virology and infectious diseases research.

Furthermore, many animals, particularly mammals, share genetic, anatomical, and physiological features with humans, making them suitable proxies for studying human diseases and drug responses. The similarity allows researchers to predict potential drug effects, toxicity, and adverse reactions in humans more accurately. Moreover, using animal models in preclinical studies helps to refine drug candidates before they enter human clinical trials, reducing the risks and costs associated with drug development. In addition, one crucial aspect of physiological similarity is the genetic makeup shared between animals and humans. While not identical, there is considerable overlap in the genetic composition between various animal species and humans. This allows researchers to study the effects of drugs and investigate disease mechanisms in animals, gaining insights that can be applied to human biology.

In addition, the advent of CRISPR technology has sparked a revolutionary transformation in the field of genetic engineering, propelling scientific advancements at an unprecedented pace. CRISPR, which stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, is a powerful gene-editing tool that enables researchers to precisely modify DNA sequences with remarkable efficiency and accuracy. CRISPR allows scientists to precisely edit the genomes of animals, creating genetically modified models that mimic human diseases more accurately. CRISPR-engineered animal models have become invaluable tools for studying human diseases and their underlying genetic mechanisms. Researchers can now replicate specific genetic mutations associated with various conditions, enabling them to gain crucial insights into disease development and potential therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, CRISPR technology has enabled the creation of humanized animal models, where certain human genes or tissues are introduced into animals. This has proven instrumental in studying human-specific diseases and drug responses, leading to more accurate preclinical trials and drug testing. The ease and cost-effectiveness of CRISPR technology have led to its widespread adoption in laboratories worldwide, contributing to the growth of the animal model market.

Thus, the animal model market is expected to achieve robust growth driven by factors such as the increased usage of animal models in virology and infectious diseases research, the physiological similarity of animals to humans for drug testing, and the growing adoption of CRISPR technology in animal model development
