Silicon photomultipliers, often called 'SiPM' in the literature, are solid-state single-photon-sensitive devices based on Single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) implemented on common silicon substrate. The dimension of each single SPAD can vary from 10 to 100 micrometres, and their density can be up to 10000 per square millimeter. Every SPAD in SiPM operates in Geiger mode and is coupled with the others by a metal or polysilicon quenching resistor. Although the device works in digital/switching mode, most of SiPM are an analog device because all the microcells are read in parallel, making it possible to generate signals within a dynamic range from a single photon to 1000 photons for a device with just a square-millimeter area. More advanced readout schemes are utilized for the lidar applications.

Drivers: SiPMs are increasingly being used in LiDAR and 3D mapping technology.

The LiDAR for automotive market will be worth USD 735.0 million in 2025, growing at a CAGR of 28.3 percent during the forecast period. In developed Western economies, there is a growing trend toward semi-autonomous vehicles. To meet changing market demand, several automobile manufacturers, including Toyota, Volvo, Nissan, and Tesla, are gradually shifting their product portfolio toward semi-autonomous vehicles. The LiDAR technology has played an important role in initiating this shift. In these semi-autonomous vehicles, LiDAR technology is used for applications such as parking, automatic braking, and automatic safety bag release. Concerns about safety, as a result of the increasing number of traffic accidents, have led to an increase in demand for this technology. This technology has had a significant impact in areas where it has been implemented.

Restraints: SiPM technology has a low penetration rate in several regions.

Silicon photomultipliers are still in their early stages of commercialization. RGB silicon photomultipliers became commercially available in 2012, while NUV silicon photomultipliers became available in 2016. Although silicon photomultiplier technology has advanced significantly over the years, its applications in a variety of industries are still being researched and developed. While SiPMs have grown rapidly in North America, Europe, and APAC, they remain relatively unknown in developing economies such as South-east Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they have little to no market penetration. This situation will persist until more potential applications for silicon photomultipliers are investigated and manufacturers, distributors, and resellers establish a sustainable supply chain to introduce this technology in different parts of the world.

Impact of COVID-19

Major Tier II and Tier III suppliers in the silicon photomultiplier market include ON Semiconductor (US), Broadcom (US), Hamamatsu Photonics (Japan), First Sensor (Germany), KETEK GmbH (Germany), AdvanSiD (Italy), Cremat (US), Excelitas Technologies (US), and others. These suppliers have manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world. COVID-19 has also had an impact on their businesses.

Segmentation By Offerings:

On the basis of Offerings, the market is segmented into Near Ultraviolet Silicon Photomultiplier and Red, Green and Blue Silicon Photomultiplier.

Segmentation By Type:

By Scanning, the market is segmented into area scan and line scan. In 2020, area scan SWIR cameras dominated the SWIR market by type, and this trend is expected to continue throughout the forecast period. The dominance of area scan SWIR cameras can be attributed to their widespread adoption across multiple verticals. Among the applications of area scan SWIR cameras are industrial process monitoring, industrial furnace monitoring, solar cell inspection, driver vision enhancement, imaging through atmospheric obscurants, and security and surveillance.

Segmentation By End User:

The market is segmented by end user into healthcare, automotive, consumer electronics and telecommunications, aerospace, oil and gas, and others. The consumer electronics and telecommunications industries have expanded rapidly in recent years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer electronics demand skyrocketed, resulting in a scarcity of silicon reserves. Silicon photomultipliers are used in a variety of analytical instruments, including scintillation and fluorescence detectors. ƒÞ Rising demand for silicon photomultipliers in scintillation detectors for radiation detection and monitoring, as well as rising demand for SiPMs for underwater optical communication, are expected to drive market growth in this segment.

Segmentation By Application:

The Market is segmented into Lidar and 3d ranging, Bio photonics and medical imaging, High energy physics, Radiation detection & monitoring and Flow cytometry.

Segmentation by Region

Based on region, the NGS services market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa. In 2020, North America held the largest share of the silicon photomultiplier market. North America is a huge market for silicon photomultipliers in industries like healthcare, automotive, consumer electronics and telecommunications, aerospace, oil and gas, and others. The United States currently holds the largest share of the North American silicon photomultiplier market; this trend is expected to continue during the forecast period. According to the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and National Health Expenditure Accounts, healthcare spending in the country has steadily increased from 1990 to 2020 and is expected to continue at the same rate during the forecast period. In 2020, the United States spent the most on healthcare, accounting for 18.1 percent of total GDP. The country's healthcare spending has more than doubled.

Competitive Landscape:

Major players in the silicon photomultiplier market include ON Semiconductor (US); Broadcom (US); Hamamatsu Photonics (Japan); First Sensor (Germany); KETEK GmbH (Germany).

Industrial Development:

In April 2021, Hamamatsu Photonics developed a new profile sensor with an embedded computing function. This sensor, called model S15366-256, is specifically designed to calculate signals from the incident light spot within its processing chip and output incident light position information. This profile sensor also has functions, including high-speed readout and automatic light spot tracking, that are likely to open up a wide range of applications in the field of factory automation.

In April 2021, Broadcom and Google Cloud collaborated in order to accelerate innovation and strengthen cloud services integration within the core software franchises of Broadcom. Under this partnership, Broadcom will deliver its suite of security and enterprise operations software on Google Cloud, enabling businesses to deploy Broadcom solutions in security, DevOps and more on Google Cloud's trusted, global infrastructure.
