  • The government has introduced initiatives designed to boost the ecommerce market. In December 2022, the Ministry of Trade organized a National Online Shopping Day (Harbolnas) to encourage the use of ecommerce and boost domestic goods trade. Meanwhile, ASEAN plans to hold an ecommerce event in Indonesia in August 2023 to promote cross-border trade. Amid growing ecommerce demand in Indonesia, new players are entering the market. In July 2022, online children's educational company Tentang Anak launched an ecommerce shopping option within its app, enabling users to buy education-related products
  • To increase the acceptance of electronic payments among merchants, in August 2019 the central bank launched QRIS. QRIS is a common standard for QR code payments that is designed to work across all electronic money apps, electronic wallets, and mobile banking services. Nationwide QRIS implementation came into effect from January 1, 2020. To promote the use of QR code payments for higher-value transactions, the central bank raised the QRIS payment limit from IDR2 million ($128.07) to IDR5 million ($320.17) from May 1, 2021. The limit was further raised to IDR20 million ($1,280.67) in February 2022
  • The proliferation of digital-only banks is likely to stir competition in the Indonesian banking sector and boost debit card adoption. In September 2022, Standard Chartered and ecommerce platform Bukalapak partnered to launch the digital-only bank BukaTabungan in the country. The bank offers products and services including saving accounts and debit cards. Previously, social messaging platform LINE partnered with Hana Bank to launch LINE Bank in Indonesia in June 2021. This digital-only bank offers saving accounts and debit cards
