Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty is commonly called PTCA, or just angioplasty. A catheter is inserted into an artery usually into the groin and sometimes in the arm or wrist. The catheter is advanced to the heart, and a series of x-ray pictures are taken to clearly visualize the heart arteries that are narrowed. Then, a balloon-tipped catheter is advanced to the heart, and into the narrow coronary artery. Inside the artery, the balloon is inflated and deflated several times, compressing the plaque against the artery wall and widening the artery for the blood flow to improve. X-rays pictures are repeated, and if the artery has been successfully re-opened, the catheters are removed.
Market Dynamics
The increasing coronary artery disease population, rising research and development activities, and increasing adoption of inorganic growth strategies such as mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, and collaborations by key players operating in the market are the major factors that are expected to drive the growth of the global percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) balloon catheter market over the forecast period.
For instance, in May 2022, Medtronic, a medical device company, announced that it received approval from the U.S food and drug administration (FDA) for IN.PACT 018 Paclitaxel-Coated Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty Balloon Catheter, a drug coated balloon (DCB), indicated for the interventional treatment of peripheral artery disease (PAD) in the superficial and popliteal arteries.
Moreover, according to the data published in American Heart Association in July 2021, lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects more than 230 million adults worldwide.
