The mobile market in Singapore is characterised by its energy and innovation. Even as growth rates slowed, there has been considerable effort still going into value-added products and services, and most importantly into new generation technologies. The market initially approached the launch of 3G with a degree of caution. As the licences were issued and the networks rolled out, some of the major operators and, to some extent, the government were circumspect about the prospect of next generation of mobiles. However, by 2012 3G subscriptions comprised three quarters of the total mobile subscriber base of almost eight million. Then with the arrival of 4G/LTE services and their rapid take up in 2013, the 3G numbers started a modest decline. Overall mobile penetration had reached 155%. Singapore had one of the lowest mobile prices in the world as a proportion of income, according to the ITU's ICT development index.

Key Developments:

following launch of 4G/LTE networks, SingTel, MobileOne and StarHub were vigorously promoting their new 4G offerings;
total 4G subscribers reached 2.8 million by August 2014;
this meant that 4G penetration was already more than 50% of population;
SingTel launched commercial 300Mb/s LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) service in 2014;
volume of SMS traffic continues to decline;
overall mobile subscriber penetration has passed 150% milestone;
SingTel expanded its mRemit mobile remittance service for transfers to Indonesia;
SingTel and Huawei agreed to collaborate on 5G research and trials.
