Increasing Demand from Automotive Industry

Ceramic coatings find ample use in automobiles. They are mostly used on exhaust components to decrease the temperature. Their low heat absorption also makes them suitable for use on heaters to keep the under-the-hood temperature low. They are also known to provide a 3% gain in the horsepower when coated on the entire exhaust system. They also keep the engine bay cooler and safer. Thus, they are increasingly being used in exhaust systems. Ceramic coatings reduce wear, lower the operating temperature, and decrease the friction when coated on engine parts, such as piston tops, rings & valves, rods, etc. Furthermore, with the increasing environment-related regulations regarding vehicle emissions, the automobile manufacturers are increasingly shifting to the use of ceramic coatings.

Aerospace & Defense is the Largest End-user

Aerospace is the largest application of thermal sprayed ceramic coatings. The various airplane components, like engines, rotors, and other mechanical parts, require hard and wear resistant coatings that can withstand high temperatures, therefore, they use ceramic coatings. The growth of the aerospace sector, particularly the civil aviation sector, in the emerging economies, like India and China, coupled with growing foreign investments will affect the market positively.

US to Lead the Ceramics Coatings Market

The United States accounts for the highest market share in the ceramic coatings market. It is also expected to grow considerably during the forecast period, driven by the recovering economy, increasing expenditure on defense & aerospace, and the increasing production of high performance automobiles. The US ceramic coatings market is also attracting many startup companies, who are coming up with innovative applications for ceramic coatings.
