Synopsis
Macedonia possesses a small but developing telecoms market. Competition in the fixed sector has been launched by an alternative operator boasting a nationwide wireless broadband access network, one of the largest in the world. Internet and broadband penetration is growing, in part due to initiatives to improve the IT literacy and public Internet access. Broadband services are available via DSL, cable, WiFi and WiMAX. The launch of IPTV services looks more likely given the approval of the incumbent’s board to launch services. Not to be outdone, the cable TV operators are upgrading infrastructure to eventually launch triple play services. Three mobile network operators offer services and the September 2008 implementation of mobile number portability will intensify competition. This report provides an overview of the communications market of the Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia in 2008, accompanied by relevant statistics and brief profiles of the major operators.
