Gene editing is moving from research tool to approved medicine. Base, prime and epigenetic editors take 44% of the new spending, editing moves into the patient, and therapies, services and agriculture overtake the research reagents that built the field.

Market Size and Growth Outlook

This report estimates the global gene editing market at $11.4 billion in 2026, growing at 15.9% a year to $23.8 billion in 2031.

Market Size 2026: USD $11.4B Market Size 2031: USD $23.8B CAGR: 15.9%

Key Market Drivers

  • Beyond the CRISPR Cut: Base editing grows 28.6% a year to $3.80 billion and prime editing 38.4% a year to $2.02 billion. CRISPR-Cas Nuclease remains the largest technology at $7.63 billion in 2026, but its share falls from 67% to 57%.
  • Editing Moves Into the Patient: In vivo editing grows 27.9% a year to $4.87 billion, rising from 12.5% to 20.5% of the market. The FDA accepted Intellia's lonvo-z, the first in vivo CRISPR therapy with Phase 3 results, for priority review with a target date of 10 March 2027.
  • Therapies Take Off: Gene Therapy grows 26% a year and Cell Therapy 23%; together they take 40% of the growth. The FDA approved Casgevy for children aged 2 and older, and its second-quarter 2026 revenue rose to $76.4 million.
  • Services Lead the Products: Services grow 19% a year to $8.44 billion and take 40% of new spending, as developers outsource guide RNA, editing and manufacturing.
  • Safety and Money Still Matter: A patient died after a severe liver event in Intellia's ATTR Phase 3 trial, and Sangamo filed for Chapter 11 before Lilly bought its platform technologies for $50 million.

Market Segmentation

The report forecasts the market by application, technology, editing setting, customer and product, for 14 countries and regions. Agriculture & Plants grows 18% a year as the EU's new genomic techniques regulation was approved, and China is the fastest-growing major country at 18.6% a year.

Competitive Landscape

CRISPR Therapeutics and Vertex have Casgevy approved in 39 countries, and CRISPR Therapeutics' in vivo ANGPTL3 editing cut triglycerides by about 55%. Intellia's lonvo-z is under FDA priority review, while its ATTR programme recovers from a patient death. Beam Therapeutics plans a BLA for risto-cel, and Prime Medicine is taking an in vivo prime editor for AATD into the clinic. Eli Lilly owns Verve, bought Sangamo's platforms and agreed to buy Kelonia, making it the most active large company in editing and delivery. Thermo Fisher, Merck KGaA, IDT, GenScript and Synthego supply the guide RNAs, enzymes, kits and services the whole field depends on, and Genus, Corteva and Pairwise lead gene-edited livestock and crops. The report profiles 56 companies.

Questions This Report Answers
