Masking Tapes are known for being able to stick to any kind of surface and are used for protecting against overspray and providing clean paint lines. Such materials are known for being thin and incredibly tear-resistant, increasing the durability of the tapes. It is widely known to be used for surface protection and strapping for bundling. The adhesive that allows the tape to be able to stick to any kind of surface is known as Tack. It allows adhesives to form a bond with the surface of another material, allowing it to stick to any kind of surface without any difficulty. There are several types of masking tapes, which include rubber-based masking tape, acrylic-based masking tape, and silicon-based masking tape, all of which are differentiated from the base material used in the production of these tapes.  Each type of tape has different characteristics and is used based on the activity it is required for in different industries, which include the automotive industry, building and construction, electronics, and painting.

The masking tape market growth is driven by several factors. It includes increasing demand from the construction industry, and multiple uses of the tape in a variety of industries, such as the automotive industry, the electronics, and the healthcare industry. These developments are driven by further mergers and acquisitions contributing to market growth. For instance- in 2023, Engineered Products & Services Inc. (EPSI) acquired Custom Rack. EPSI has seven manufacturing locations throughout Texas, U.S. and added to the lineup with Custom Rack’s addition. This acquisition will further add to the production capacity of the company for masking tape solutions.

The masking tape demand is closely related to the construction industry and driven by it. In India, in 2021, under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), a demand survey was undertaken and assessed a demand of 112.24 lakh houses in urban areas. Following this, a total of 114.06 lakh houses have been sanctioned so far. Of the sanctioned houses, 89.36 lakh houses have been grounded for construction; of which 52.55 lakh houses have been completed and delivered.   This will boost the application of masking tapes in the sector, leading to the masking tape market growth. Pressure-sensitive masking tape provides a clean & professional product without leaving any residue owing to which they are majorly used in the automotive sector during the precise component painting process. According to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, in 2022, the United States witnessed 10% growth in its automotive production with the volume reaching 10.06 million units. Additionally, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association, in the first half of 2023, the average number of new vehicles sold in the United States stood at 455 which represented a 12.6% increase over 2022 for the same period.  Moreover, masking tapes besides automotive also find applicability in consumer electronics and construction sectors both of which witnessing bolstering growth in the United States. For instance, according to the US Census Bureau, during the first eleven months of 2023, total construction spending stood at US$1,817.1 billion which signified a 6.2% increase over US$1,711.1 in 2022 for the same period.
