The TRIAC market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.79% over the forecast period to reach US$231.263 million by 2027 from US$190.806 million in 2020. TRIAC or triode for alternating current is a type of semiconductor device consisting of three terminals namely M1, M2, and Gate which allows current flow when triggered in either direction. Such a device is a power control system has high applicability in alternate current applications such as in electric motors of household appliances. TIRAC unlike its substitute such as Silicone Controlled Rectifier (SCR), uses a single fuse for protection, has four modes of operation, and can control positive as well negative alternate current signal output. With such high-performance benefits, the demand for TRIAC devices is projected to increase in the future, furthermore, the growing urban population is expected to take the market in new directions. For instance, according to the World Bank, in 2021, the global urban population held a 57% share of the overall percentage share of the global population, and as per the same source, by 2045 the number of urban residents will increase to 6 billion. Based on package type, the TRIAC market is segmented as pin type, disc type, and stud type. The pin type segment is expected to grow at a relatively higher rate during the forecast period of the TRIAC market. Pin type TRIAC is an integrated circuit unit consisting of three terminals namely MT1, MT2, and Gate and has high applicability in household appliances such as electric fans, heaters, and lamps as it provides good stability over power control and speed of the appliance. The demand for such TRAIC packages is expected to increase in the future owing to the bolstering growth in household appliance consumption, which will stimulate the segment growth as well as the overall market growth of the TRIAC market during the forecast period.

The rapid increase in household appliance consumption is creating a surge in the growth of the TRIAC market. TRIAC or triode for alternating current has high voltage blocking capacity owing to which it provides effective power control over current flow and distribution. Such devices owing to their power control feature are used majorly in household appliances to control the speed of the motors. For instance, according to the annual report of Whirlpool Corporation, in 2021, the sale of refrigeration products of the company saw an increase of 10.2% followed by dishwashers with 17.7% and laundry products with 7.9% in comparison to the 2020’s sales volume. Furthermore, according to the annual report of Emerson Electric Co, in 2021, the overall sales of the tools & home products of the company consisting of electric fans, and electric water heaters among others saw an increase of 15% in comparison to the 2020’s sales figure. With such an increase in the consumption of household appliances, the demand for TRIAC is also expected to increase in the future, thereby boosting the overall market growth during the forecast period.

  • STMicroelectronics, in January 2021, launched “8H Traics” which is a new line of 800V snubberless traic that have a current carrying capacity ranging from 8 to 30 amps and can operate at temperatures of up to 150 °C thereby having higher heat tolerance.
  • In September 2021, Digi Key Electronics entered into a distribution partnership with Siemens which will enable Digi Key Electronics to offer its wide range of automation and control products including standard TRIACS.
  • In October 2019, Liffelfuse Inc. expanded its high-temperature TRIAC thyristor product series by adding five new series of high-temperature Alternistor TRIAC switching thyristor which is designed to be used as semiconductor switches equipment and appliances powered by AC voltages of up to 250VRMS.

Covid-19 Impact on the TRIAC Market

The global lockdown and restrictions on movement disrupted the activities of various industrial sectors. The shutting down of various plants and factories led to a decrease in the usage of alternate switching applications for industrial lighting. Also, the demand for household appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators witnessed a major drop. For instance, according to the annual report of Whirlpool Corporation, in 2020, the sales of company laundry products such as washing machines saw a decrease of 8.4%, whereas the refrigeration products saw a decrease of 2.7% in comparison to 2019’s sale volume. TRIAC semiconductors are majorly used in lighting and home appliances for power control, owing to the shutdown of industrial plants coupled with the decrease in household appliance consumption, the TIRAC market witnessed a decrease in market growth. However, the government showing ease in COVID restrictions is expected to provide a positive outlook for the TRIAC market, thereby providing steady market growth during the forecast period.
