The biocides industry had a difficult year driven by the economic downturn. However, growth opportunities remain in specialist applications such as household cleaners, sanitizers and anti-bacterial soaps.

Most biocide active ingredient manufacturers are "positive" on this market due to favourable trends such as growing population and GDP growth, an increase in importance of hygiene, legislative / regulatory pressures on environmental and health issues (VOC, REACH) driving innovation, and while it may be difficult to develop new active ingredients, there is a lot of development work going on to find “environmentally friendly” biocides and the right combination of actives and formulations to adapt to end-user demands.

Specialty biocides include incan bactericides and disinfecting agents. The U.S. is the single largest market for Biocides. However, several factors are combining to bring the total market value up and the U.S. percentage down, according to Biocide Information.
