Although cash remains the preferred payment method in Germany, card payments are clearly on the rise. Charge and credit cards are in particular benefiting from widening merchant acceptance and seeing high growth rates. This trend has been accelerated by the EU Interchange Fee Regulation, which limits fees to 0.3% of transaction value. While this regulation came into effect at the end of 2015, it continues to encourage a shift towards card payments.
