Rotten fruit: Industry revenue is expected to fall in 2023-24 due to the cost-of-living crisis
Industry revenue is expected to contract at a compound annual rate of 1.9% over the five years through 2023-24, including a revenue drop of 1.3% in the current year, to £4.9 billion. The cost-of-living crisis has hindered the industry as consumers have switched to cheaper unprocessed fruit and vegetables to save money. Fierce competition among downstream supermarkets has put pressure on industry prices, constraining revenue. However, the industry has benefitted from rising health consciousness.
Fruit and vegetable processors slice, roast, bottle, can, preserve, freeze and quick-dry fruit and vegetables. The industry also produces perishable prepared foods, including packaged salads, peeled or cut vegetables and tofu. Ready meals, crisps and chips are not covered by the industry (see reports C10.850 and C10.310).
This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
