Forest Management and Planning provides a focused understanding of contemporary forest management issues through real life examples to engage students.

The methodology for the development of quantitatively-derived forest management plans - from gathering information to the implementation of plans at the forest level - are clearly explained. Emphasis is placed on the development of traditional commodity production forest plans using linear programming, the development of alternative forest plans, and problem resolution in planning.

The authors have developed this book based on their personal experience in teaching forest management courses and the review of ten forestry programs (Auburn University, University of Georgia, Iowa State University, Louisiana State University, Northern Arizona University, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Florida, Virginia Tech, and Oregon State University). The integration of extended case studies of a variety of scenarios as well as the inclusion of a section on report writing will engage students. Acknowledgement and integration of various software packages for forest management provide the most useful tools for those studying forest management and distinguish this book from the competition.

This book is an ideal resource for students of Forest Management - primarily an upper-level course in forestry, and natural resource management, wildlife, and recreation programs.

Pete Bettinger Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Georgia, Athens, GA, USA. Pete Bettinger is a professor of forestry at the University of Georgia. He teaches forest planning, forest measurements, and aerial photogrammetry; and conducts research in applied forest management with particular emphasis on harvest scheduling, precision forestry, and geospatial technologies. Dr. Bettinger has worked with the forest industry in the southern and western United States, and maintains this connection to forestry professionals through his leadership in the Southern Forestry and Natural Resource Management GIS Conference and other continuing education courses he offers. Dr. Bettinger is also a co-author of two other books published by Academic Press, Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resources, and Forest Plans of North America. Kevin Boston Oregon State University, USA. Kevin Boston an associate professor at Oregon State University. He has held academic and professional positions in both New Zealand and United States. He is a registered professional forester in California and licensed logging engineer in Oregon. His research area are in forest planning, forest transportation, and forest policy. Jacek P. Siry Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Georgia, Athens, GA, USA. Jacek Siry is a professor of forest economics at the University of Georgia. He teaches forest economics, economics of renewable resources, and international forest business, and conducts research in applied forest economics with emphasis on timber markets, investments and finance, and forest management. Dr. Siry is also a co-author of two other books published by Academic Press, Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resources, and Forest Plans of North America. Donald L. Grebner Department of Forestry, Mississippi State University, USA. Dr. Donald L. Grebner is a professor in the Department of Forestry, Mississippi State University. His areas of research specialization include forest management and economics, bioenergy, carbon sequestration, and forest protection. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, both traditional and distance, in forest resource management, advanced forest management, and international forest resources and trade. Prior to his time at Mississippi State, he worked as an extension forester with the U.S. Peace Corps in Costa Rica and was a research analyst for Winrock International. He is very active in the Society of American Foresters as well as the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, Unit 4.02.00 Accounting and Managerial Economics Working Group. Dr. Grebner is a co-author of three textbooks entitled Forest Management and Planning, Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resources, and Forest Plans of North America. Dr. Bettinger received Bachelor's and Masters degrees in forestry from Virginia Tech, and a PhD in forest resources from Oregon State University. Dr. Bettinger worked for the forest industry in the southern and western United States and maintains this connection to forestry professionals through his leadership in the Southern Forestry and Natural Resource Management GIS Conference and other continuing education courses he regularly offers. Dr. Bettinger has published over 140 peer-reviewed journal articles and is a co-author of four books published by Academic Press, Forest Management and Planning, Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resources, Mapping Human and Natural Systems, and Forest Plans of North America. Dr. Bettinger is Deputy Coordinator for IUFRO Division 4.04.00 (Forest management planning). He is a member of the editorial boards of Forest Science, Journal of Sustainable Forestry, Journal of Forest Planning, European Journal of Forest Engineering, and Mathematical and Computational Forestry & Natural-Resource Sciences. In 2009, he was presented the Award of Excellence for Research and Development by the Southeastern Division of the Society of American Foresters. In 2016 he was presented the Creative Research Medal by the University of Georgia. In 2018, he was elected as a Fellow in the Society of American Foresters. Dr. Bettinger teaches introduction to forestry, forest planning, aerial photogrammetry, and field orientation and measurements courses at the University of Georgia. He has received five teaching awards from the University of Georgia for these activities.
