Also, mechanical valves are also susceptible to thrombosis, thromboembolism, or spontaneous bleeding. Despite the benefits offered, BHVs comprising homografts, pulmonary autografts, and porcine assembled aortic valves and pericardial bovine bioprostheses, are prone to structural valve degeneration (SVD) which occurs due to stenosis and regurgitation. The need of the hour is innovation in mechanical valves. There is urgent need for new research studies to design, test and manufacture mechanical valves that are anticoagulant independent, durable, safe and cost efficient. Nonetheless, valve substitution will remain the standard of care despite the many unresolved problems with valve durability, hemodynamics, cost and need for anticoagulation therapy.
