Canada has a broadband penetration rate several percentage points above the OECD average. Government policy has encouraged the extension of broadband to rural and regional areas, with the result that services are almost universally available. Cable broadband is the principal access platform, closely followed by DSL. The main cablecos are upgrading their networks to the DOCSIS3.1 standard, which can deliver data at 1Gb/s and above. Fibre deployments are also gaining momentum, with a growing number of Gigabit towns now connected.

This report provided updated statistics, analysis and forecasts on the Canadian fixed-line broadband sector, providing statistical overviews and an analysis on operator strategies.

Key Developments:

Shaw doubles broadband data rate to 300Mb/s via DOCSIS3.1;
Bell to launch a 1.5Gb/s FttP service across its fibre footprint;
SaskTel opens its first Tier 3 data centre, invests in Northern Fibre Expansion project;
Regulator opens consultation on managing a planned $750 million broadband fund for rural and underserved areas;
Vidéotron extends DOCSIS3.1 service;
Bell Canada to invest $854 million to deliver Gigabit fibre to Montreal;
Ontario Broadband Project developments;
Eastlink launches 200Mb/s service;
OneGigabit launches in Vancouver;
Report includes the regulator's 2017 market data, telcos' operating and financial data to Q2 2018, recent market developments.
