Drying out: Rising digitalization rates continue to reduce demand for industry products

Traditional forms of printed media, including newspapers, books, magazines and even letter mail, have been significantly declining since the inception of the internet. However, the fading relevance of print media does not occur in isolation; the transition to digital media has had serious implications for the Ink Manufacturing industry, which primarily engages in the production of printing inks and ink cartridges. Over the five years to 2019, many operators have made internal changes to focus on more profitable ink product segments. These restructuring efforts have required significant capital outlay from operators, pressuring those without the resources to adapt. As a result, several suffering and unprofitable operators have exited the industry or merged with larger ink manufacturing behemoths. Over the five years to 2024, demand for ink products, such as printers and xerox machines, are expected to decrease with the increase in electronic mail and documents. People now prefer to read the news on their mobiles or tablets because of easy access to global news anytime. Companies are opting for digital marketing with the help of social media and different websites which are visited frequently. Due to these reasons, print media will likely continue to compete with digital media during the outlook period.

Companies in this industry manufacture inkjet cartridges and printing and inkjet inks, including lithographic, flexographic, gravure and letterpress inks. These products are sold to commercial printers, newspaper and magazine printers, office supplies wholesalers and screen printers. This industry does not include operators that manufacture writing, drawing and stamping ink or toner cartridges for photocopiers, fax machines and computer printers.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
