Premium is the name of the game

The ongoing premiumisation trend has impacted all hot drinks categories. Whether cold brew and fresh coffee beans in coffee, loose leaf and herbal teas, or premium hot chocolate beverages, consumers increasingly demand higher-quality, ethically-sourced, and well-crafted hot drinks.

Health trends influence consumption habits

In the face of growing waistlines, Americans are consciously replacing unhealthy beverages with perceived healthier drinks. As a result, other hot drinks, predominantly sugar-laden chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks, suffered its worst retail sales decline in a decade in 2016, while intrinsically healthy options like fruit/herbal tea and fresh coffee beans made gains. New academic studies stating the health benefits of coffee and tea improved the perception of these types of beverages.

Keurig’s growth fades, though its strength persists

The meteoric rise of Keurig Green Mountain to become hot drinks leader has stalled. Riding the surge in consumer adoption of its coffee pod machines, Keurig Green Mountain’s own and licensed coffee pods experienced years of strong sales growth. However, a backlash against the company’s new machine, unsustainable pods and competitive alternatives has put the brakes on its growth prospects. Despite stagnation, Keurig Green Mountain remained the leading player in hot drinks in retail value share terms in 2016.

Unilever looks to Pure Leaf to inspire growth

Recognising the greater strength of Pure Leaf compared with Lipton in RTD tea and the necessity for a premium-positioned product, Unilever extended its Pure Leaf brand into hot drinks. Pure Leaf, as a hot tea brand, was launched in October 2016; it is available nationwide in pyramid tea bags and as a loose leaf format. Pure Leaf has been given premium-positioning from this previously economy focused company. If Pure Leaf performs as well as in RTD tea, much can be expected from this new addition to hot drinks.

Tea is set to post the fastest growth in the forecast period

While hot drinks as a whole is projected to post moderate growth over the forecast period, the underlying dynamics in categories are expected to see tea register the fastest retail value and total volume CAGRs over the forecast period. Tea is set to capture share of throat in hot drinks by 2021. This gain bucks the review period trend, when hot drinks consumption was relatively stable.
