Consumer credit outstanding balance and gross lending both grew more slowly in current value terms in 2017 than in 2016. Mortgage lending continued to contribute the bulk of growth, as demand for home ownership remained strong as consumers deleveraged. Consumers were cautious about taking on more debt given the expected interest rate hike and the high level of household debt. Consumers’ ability and capacity to take on more loans were seriously hampered by this ever-increasing level of debt.
