With the introduction of a levy on sugar and artificial sweetened drinks, and also intensive media coverage of this change, Portuguese consumers are reducing their consumption of traditional soft drinks, which is due to both health concerns and price changes. Under the new government tax, soft drinks with more than 80 grams of sugar per litre will be taxed at EUR16.46 per 100 litres, while soft drinks with fewer than 80 grams will pay a tax of EUR8.22 per 100 litres.
