Challenges ahead for food and beverage packaging

In February 2014, the FDA announced a proposal for updated Nutrition Facts labels for packaged food products. The proposed changes include increasing the size of the calorie count section to make it more prominent and adding a line about added sugars. In addition, how serving sizes are calculated will be modified to reflect more accurately what people actually consume. These changes are likely to lead to growth of small pack sizes as well as a manufacturer-driven effort to have servings that are lower in calories and added sugar.

Smaller pack sizes continue to thrive

A shift towards small pack sizes continued in consumer goods packaging. Initially a driving force in packaged foods as a method of portion control, other industries’ manufacturers embraced smaller packaging enthusiastically. Carbonated soft drink consumers embraced small packages of sugary beverages as an indulgent, portion-controlled product while manufacturers benefited from the higher margins these offerings provide, and beauty and personal care manufacturers turned to small packages due to the travel restrictions on liquids and consumer impulse purchases.

New products drive packaging innovation

Whether in home care, soft drinks, or foods, new products and innovative packaging helped each other to be successful. In an attempt to stand out from the competition on store shelves, new products are increasingly packaged in an unconventional way in order to capture consumer attention, assist in product consumption, and facilitate brand recognition.

Glass packaging in beverages regains momentum

The standard beverage packaging, glass bottles, steadily regained the lost share of beverages as consumers welcomed premium, indulgent products. Soft drinks in glass bottles competed with metal beverage cans and PET bottles through premium bottled water brands and indulgent carbonated soft drinks, respectively, while premium craft beer competed successfully with beer packaged in metal beverage cans.

Sustainability remains key

Despite efforts to make products more glamorous and convenient, a growing interest among consumers in sustainability continues to be seen. In response, manufacturers continue to focus on creating more sustainable packaging. This led to a great deal of innovation in plastics and other materials to make them more environmentally friendly by using fewer materials and materials from renewable sources. While this primarily affects beverage products, home care and foods manufacturers also began to follow a similar trend.
