Apparel and footwear experienced slow retail volume and current value sales growth in 2017. The industry struggled to overcome headwinds, such as unseasonably warm weather, a rapidly changing retail landscape and a growing consumer desire for experience. Winter apparel like jackets and coats and jumpers saw sales declines, while suits and skirts also underperformed due to the popularity of everyday casualwear.

Apparel and footwear sees another year of slow growth

Apparel and footwear in the US experienced another year of slow growth in 2016. The improving job market and rising pay supported consumer consumption over the last five years, and this continued in 2016, but at a slower pace. American consumers cut back on discretionary spending on clothing and footwear. Sales from foreign tourists were also down due to the strong US dollar. Sportswear continued to register strong growth, thanks to the health and wellness trend. Consumers are increasingly choosing to wear sports apparel and footwear for various daily activities, from going to the gym to working in the office, attending social gatherings and running errands. The continued casualisation of dress codes intensified the widespread adoption of sportswear in consumers’ lifestyles.

The changing retail landscape leads to the bankruptcy of major retailer.

The competitive pressure from the growing number of fast-fashion and online retailers led to the bankruptcy of some major retailers. In 2016, sports goods chains including Sports Authority, Eastern Mountain Sports and Sport Chalet filed for bankruptcy. Apparel retailers targeted towards a younger audience, such as Pacific Sunwear, Wet Seal, Delia’s, Aeropostale and Quiksilver, also followed bankruptcy in the same year. In addition to the increasingly severe competition, these retailers faced the challenges of dealing with low traffic in shopping centres and changing spending priorities amongst teenagers. Other stores that were not in financial distress also closed stores which were seeing a weaker performance. These included Macy’s, Kohl’s, Men’s Wearhouse and Finish Line.

Sportswear brands and fast-fashion brands see strong growth.

The market remains competitive and fragmented, as a broad range of players, from domestic to international, small to large, and branded to private label, compete at different price points through multiple distribution channels. Within such a crowded apparel and footwear market, sportswear brands such as Nike, adidas and Under Armour registered strong performances in 2016, thanks to the activewear boom. Fast-fashion brands such as H&M and Forever 21 also saw significant growth. Young consumers chose fast-fashion brands due to the trendy and fashionable clothing available at inexpensive prices. With the growth of fast-fashion companies and online retailers, shopping centre-based brands such as J Crew, Abercrombie & Fitch and Gap struggled with disappointing sales.

Online apparel and footwear sales show no sign of slowing down

Apparel and footwear in the US is seeing a major shift from in-store purchases to digital purchases. The growth of digital commerce is largely supported by the increase of digitally-savvy consumers. Apparel and footwear brands and retailers are investing strongly in building their presence in internet retailing and improving their websites to provide a seamless shopping experience for consumers. More consumers are researching and buying products online, and this trend is likely to continue. Store-based apparel and footwear retailers will need to rapidly adapt to digital retailing and marketing to attract this growing digital audience.

The market is expected to see healthy growth over the forecast period

The apparel and footwear market is expected to grow, albeit at a slow pace, over the next five years. Donald Trump’s unexpected victory in the US election has rapidly increased uncertainties surrounding future economic policies and the market. In addition, players in apparel and footwear will continue to face the challenges of changing in consumer behaviour and dealing with the faster pace of the fashion cycle. The retail landscape will continuously change and increasingly become a tech-driven marketplace. Retailers will need to improve the seamless omnichannel shopping experience to accommodate rapidly changing consumer needs.
