Premiumisation, one of the most significant developments in soft drinks, has manifested itself in juice in the form of cold-pressed juices. Cold-pressed juices, which are processed without pasteurisation and stored refrigerated, hold two advantages over shelf stable juices. The first is the perception of improved flavour thanks to not being treated with high temperatures.

Trends

Volume sales in the US continued to decline in 2016 as consumers turned away from juices due to concerns about their high sugar content. This situation has led to an ongoing year-on-year decline in per capita consumption, falling from 47 litres in 2002 to just 33 litres in 2016. In spite of this decline, areas of opportunity in the juice category have been seen, particularly in the premium segment via “raw juices” (unpasteurised), cold-pressed (or HPP) juices, fringe juices like coconut and other plant waters and juice smoothies. While also affected by a high sugar content, the natural and healthy positioning of these juices has enabled them to prosper, driving up average unit price by 2% in 2016.

Competitive Landscape

The Coca-Cola Co continued to lead juice in 2016 with an off-trade value share of 18%, up from 17% the previous year, to reach sales of USD3.1 billion. Despite the company’s leading brand, Minute Maid, posting an off-trade value sales decline of 3%, a strong performance from the Simply family brand and Odwalla, with growth of 9% and 44%, respectively, more than offset the decline, enabling Coca-Cola to achieve off-trade value sales growth of 5% for the year.

Prospects

Over the forecast period it is expected that consumers prioritising quality over quantity (and for that matter, price) will be the undisputed driving force behind juice in the US. While HPP has been a fashionable method of pasteurisation over the past five years, microfiltration, first used by Harmless Harvest for its coconut water in 2016, promises to be a new selling point in the years to come. Beyond pasteurisation methods, the continued adoption of real fruit and vegetable juices as opposed to natural and artificial flavours is expected to grow in prominence.
