China’s nearly two-decade high economic growth and the improvement of the people’s lifestyles have driven the rapidly rising demand for consumption of fast food.

Since 1991, the country’s consumption of fast food has grown 23.2% annually. It is forecast that Chinese rapid development will continue to fuel demands for fast food and to lead to the growth of the industry. The revenues of fast food reached 135,200.0 million yuan (16,368.0 million US dollars) in 2001. In order to meet the domestic improvement of the people’s living level and the change of living style, China will continue to increase its input. The total revenues of fast food will increase 26.1% annually to 431,597.4 million yuan (52,251.5 million US dollars) by the year 2006 and will advance to 1,322,487.3 million yuan(160,107.4 million US dollars) by the end of 2011, increasing by 25.1% per annum.

The fast food industry often includes fast food restaurants, teahouses, coffee shops and juice bars in China. The former include Chinese style fast food and the foreign cuisines. Like surging demands for Chinese style fast food in domestic consumers, China is also a large consumers market of the foreign cuisines. Up to now, many fast foods of foreign style have entered China’s market such as McDonald’s, KFC, DICOS and so on.
