Smoking ban

2005 represented the first full year of the smoking ban and it was marked by confusion and upheaval, especially for pub and restaurant owners who have suffered a large downturn in wet sales due in part to this legislation. The influence of the smoking ban is probably most obvious in urban areas such as Dublin, where outlets keen to accommodate smokers have developed a range of outdoor facilities transforming cities into a more continental style with outdoor seating now commonplace.

Budget brands

Rising house prices have developed in tandem with the Celtic tiger economy and many consumers are now reported to be trying to cut back their expenditure in order to afford steep mortgage payments. High taxation on cigarettes has forced many consumers to look for cheaper alternatives and there has been notable growth in the budget range along with super king size cigarettes and RYO. High taxation has also encouraged the black market which continues to be a feature of the Irish tobacco industry, in spite of government efforts to block the trade.

Gallaher leads the pack

Gallaher continued to lead in volume sales of cigarettes in Ireland in 2005. John Player followed, with P J Carroll in third place. Gallaher maintained its lead over its rivals through the overwhelming popularity of its premium flagship brands, Benson & Hedges and Silk Cut. It was also one of the first tobacco companies in Ireland to release economic indicators in the wake of the ban. However, as all companies are expected to experience some consequences, it is unlikely that Gallaher will slip from its top slot over the forecast period.
