Aquaponics is a symbiotic integration of two disciplines, aquaculture, or the raising of fish and hydroponics, or the growth of plants in a water-based system. Fishes such as tilapia, brim, crappie, carp, bass, goldfish and koi, whereas plants such as chives, lettuce, and other leafy crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes, melons, peppers, flowers and many other crops are grown. The entire system works in a cyclic manner where the water is recirculated, wherein the fish wastes provide nutrients for the growing plants and the plants offer clean water for the fish. Fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides or other harsh chemicals are not used in the food production system, thereby resulting in an organic and natural system.

The Aquaponics Market has been segmented based on Components, Equipment, End-Users and Geography. Rearing Tanks, Settling Basin, Biofilter, Hydroponics Subsytem, Sump and Aquaponics Produce are among the major Components used in Aquaponics. The various types of Equipment used in Aquaponics involve Grow Lights, In-line water Heaters, Pumps and Valves, Greenhouse Equipment, Monitoring and Alarms, Water Quality Testing, Fish Purge Systems, Aeration Systems and others. This form of agriculture has found widespread usage across commercial, community, home production and research and education sectors.

Aquaponics is a niche market and shows no signs of slowing down. With the accelerating world population, there has been a sharp increase in the rising food demand. People are catering to fresh foods to surpass the various genetically altered foods, resulting in various disruptions of growth hormones and other diseases. The Americas has shown a significant growth in this market, followed by APAC. Currently, there exist around 20,000 aquaponic practitioners across the globe with high concentration in developed nations such as U.S., U.K., Australia, Japan and Canada. The increase in the number of commercial practitioners since 2010 coupled with rise in the scale of production have been resulting in increased profitability and more scope for consulting services as well as equipment.

Prominent players in the Aquaponics Market involve:
Nelson & Pade Inc.,
ECF Farmsystems GmbH,
Japan Aquaponics,
Urban Farms AG,
Aquaponics World LLC.
