Over the review period, volume sales of carbonates saw consistent decline due to a battery of hesitations among consumers due to the rise of health and wellness concerns. Until 2018, however, producers managed to offset the volume decline with gains in value terms. In 2018, this trend reversed as carbonates started to see current value sales decline. This was because of larger decreases in the value sales of the largest cola brands, Pepsi and Coca-Cola, as well as their flavour variants.

Trends

Carbonates continued to struggle in the US in 2016, with off-trade volume sales declining by 1%. Health concerns about the consumption of both sugar and artificial sweeteners continued to wear away at the category and boost alternatives like bottled water. With no reversal of this trend in sight, major companies like Coca-Cola are increasingly looking at non-carbonates categories to generate sales growth in the future.

Competitive Landscape

The category leader The Coca-Cola Co saw its retail sales remain largely stable over 2015/2016. Coca-Cola has been increasingly grouping its carbonates together in marketing campaigns (called its “One Brand” strategy) as a way of highlighting the choices consumers have when it comes to the company’s carbonates. It has also been pushing smaller pack types as a way of keeping sales steady while volumes drop. There has been little else in terms of product development in carbonates as much of Coca-Cola’s attention has been focused on other categories like RTD tea, which are seen as more promising.

Prospects

The carbonates category is set to continue to decline over the forecast period as the anti-sugar sentiment that has dogged it for years is showing no sign of abating. The success of carbonated waters like La Croix and certain mixers show that while American consumers still appreciate carbonation, they would prefer it to come with as little sugar and as few artificial sweeteners as possible. Non-carbonated beverages like RTD tea, RTD coffee and plant waters will all continue to grow at the expense of carbonates.
