Huiping Liu Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, USA. Dr. Huiping Liu is an expert in breast cancer stem cells and metastasis. She is co-director of the Cancer Stem Cell Conference in 2014 and 2016 with Justin Lathia. Dr. Liu's research recently has been focused on thoroughly understanding the role of microRNAs in breast cancer stem cells, metastasis, and therapy resistance. The goals of the Liu laboratory are to control metastasis and eliminate the mortality associated with breast cancer and other types of cancer. She is known as an active collaborator - bridging research in basic science, engineering, and clinical medicine by engaging physicians and researchers across many institutions. Thus, she is very well known in the field and highly regarded as both a researcher and conference organizer. Justin Durla Lathia Assistant Professor, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (NC10), Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland, OH, USA. Dr. Lathia is an expert in brain tumor stem cells. He is co-director of the Cancer Stem Cell Conference in 2014 and 2016 with Huiping Liu. Dr. Lathia's research has two main areas of focus: using in vivo imaging models to interrogate the tumor microenvironment and examining communication mechanisms used by cancer stem cells to promote their maintenance. His lab is focused on understanding cancer stem cells in real time, so they can be better eliminated by therapy and, thus, prevent tumors from forming, metastasizing, and becoming resistant to therapy.
